Day Tours Bamberg
Bamberg’s beer scene can’t be covered in only one day! Although it is a relatively small city, with everything within walking distance or a short bus ride, it wouldn’t be fun rushing around and not being able to enjoy the tour, just to try and see everything. Bamberg has so many breweries, interesting places, beer bars and historic sites, so that the day tours in Bamberg are split into three different tours. Tour A,B and C. They are set up in way, that if you take all three, you will have been at on location (brewery, gasthaus, beerkeller/garden) of every one of Bamberg’s 15 breweries AND have seen many historic and other beer relevant sites in between! Some breweries aren’t open on certain days (like Sunday for example), so it is also split over different days of the week.
Day tours DO NOT include a hotel room for that night! I do suggest getting a room for the night after a tour though! I CAN be of assistance in booking a room if needed.

FRIDAY TOUR
As mentioned previously, Bamberg’s beer scene can’t be covered in only one day!
The Friday tour covers the outskirts of Bamberg, moving downtown along old trade routes with active and inactive breweries, historical locations and ends right in the center of the old town!
Although itinerary and routes may change depending on weather, local events, unforeseeable circumstances etc., two attractions specific to the Friday tour are visits to the world famous Weyermann Malt Factory and the „Hopfengarten“ (Hopgarden) – Crop/Produce Market & Brewery!
Hopfengarten – Bamberg is not only a beer town, but also has a large „Gärtner“ culture. „Gärtners“ are local crop builders with most of their fields within in the city, hidden behind larger buildings and spread in small to medium lots all over the city. The „Hopfengarten“ Brewery is an offshoot of the family owned crop builder shop „Gärtnerei Emmerling“. Kris Emmerling decided to bring back the tradition of growing hops in Bamberg in his own fields. The first beers were from Bamberg’s „Keesmann“ Brewery and dry hopped with the „Hopfengarten’s“ hops. Now a tiny independent brewery, they make very interesting beers with their own homegrown ingredients like chili, lemons, eucalyptus leaves, mint and other fruits, vegetables and herbs!
Weyermann® Malt Factory – Bamberg’s beer culture is built on a „Holy Triumvirate“. For one, the breweries. Two, Kaspar Schulz. The WORLD’S oldest brewery equipment producer. Three, MALT. Weyermann are not the world’s biggest maltsters, but they are the most renowned! With over 80 different malt products, delivered to over 135 countries, this institution of Bamberg’s beer industry was a major force in the worldwide craft beer revolution of the past years! This company has such a cult status in the brewing world, that they were even mentioned in an Episode of „Fear The Walking Dead“!
NOTE: Day tours DO NOT include a hotel room for that night! I do suggest getting a room for the night after a tour though! I CAN be of assistance in booking a room if needed. The above mentioned breweries and places of interest are generally planned for these days and tours. At some times, due to forces out of my control, it may not be possible to visit these places. In such a rare occurrence, a suitable substitute will be visited!

SATURDAY TOUR
As mentioned previously, Bamberg’s beer scene can’t be covered in only one day!
The Saturday tour starts at 11:00 (unless otherwise stated), covers some of the most traditional of Bamberg’s breweries, historical locations starting across the river from the old city and ends right in the center of the old town!
Although itinerary and routes may change depending on weather, local events, unforeseeable circumstances etc., one area we will definitely visit on Saturday is the „Wunderburg“ (which literally translates to Wonderous Castle) part of Bamberg! The name derives from the fortified buildings that were built when this part of town was founded. It was once known as the „Brewery Triangle“, since Maisel Brewery, Keesmann Brewery and Mahr’s Bräu were located here! Sadly, Maisel no longer exists…but Keesmann and Mahr’s are two of Bamberg’s most legendary breweries!
Another brewery we will visit is the “Greifenklau”, which literally translates to “Griffin’s Claw”! The actual brewery was founded in 1719, while the buildings which constitute today’s brewery were first mentioned all the way back in 1585! The Brockard Family has owned & operated it now for four generations. This is a perfect example of a small, traditional, Franconian family owned brewery and gasthaus!
Ahörnla Bräu – The building this brewery was and now is in again, was first mentioned in 1366 and as a brewery in 1406. The brewery stopped beer production in 1961. After extensive renovations to this historical building, a new brewery picked up the tradition of brewing beer here in 2021! A modern „tower brewery“ in a historical building…a great new addition to Bamberg’s beer culture!

SUNDAY TOUR
As mentioned previously, Bamberg’s beer scene can’t be covered in only one day!
The Sunday tour covers some of the most traditional and central of Bamberg’s breweries, historical locations, modern brew pubs and ends right in the center of the old town!
Although itinerary and routes may change depending on weather, local events, unforeseeable circumstances etc., the Sunday Tour combines modern brew pubs and locations with somme of the most historic of Bamberg’s breweries, like the world famous „Schlenkerla“.
Schlenkerla (Heller Bräu Trum) – Along wth the „Spezial Brewery“, one of the two breweries in Bamberg that stayed with the traditional way of drying their malt, thus giving their beer a smoky taste. Owned by the Trum Family for six generations, this is Bamberg’s most famous and recognizable brewery!
Klosterbräu – Bamberg’s oldest brewery! First mentioned as a brewery in 1333 and has been a brewery continuously since 1533! It was owned by the Prince Bishops of Bamberg until 1790. Right in the middle of the old town, this brewery boasts historic architecture, great beer and food!
Brauhaus zum Sternla – Bamberg’s oldest gasthaus (pub)! Dating back to 1380, it didn’t become a brewery until very recently in 2019! Great Franconian food and beer has always been a part of this medievel site!
