Beer Keller & Garden Tour – Summer

Wednesday, 09. July 2025 to Sunday, 13. July 2025

This 5-day tour covers a lot of ground! A few days in the city of Bamberg itself and a few days out in the countryside, enjoying the scenery, culture, breweries, atmosphere, history and of course beers…in some of the most interesting and scenic beer kellers and beer gardens around!

What exactly is a „beer keller“? A beer keller is basically a beer garden, situated above the old beer cellars (kellers) and storage tunnels, in which the breweries used to store and cool their beers.

Beer kellers are specific to Franconia and are not found very often elsewhere. Due to the geographic location of the area, the cooling nature of these storage cellars became a major factor in the development of bottom fermented lagers, the beer industry and beer culture in the area!

Keller season usually starts around April and ends in September or October (depending on the weather), right before the first bock beers are tapped. Many kellers offer spectacular views of the area. Some are hidden and not known to many non-locals. They offer a varying assortment of food and drinks, from purely one style of „Keller Beer“ and platters of cold meats & cheese, to warm Franconian food and a larger assortment of traditional & modern beer styles.

On this tour, you will have the opportunity to drink a real „keller beer“, the way it was meant to be! Sitting on a Franconian beer keller and enjoying it straight from the barrel in a „Steinkrug“! Keller beers generally have a lower level of carbonation and historically where not as malty sweet as many are nowadays. They are VERY drinkable, especially with the right food!

The 5-day tour offers a very in depth view of the local beer scene. Bamberg is amazing and the „Beer Capital of Germany“, but none the less, it is only the tip of the iceberg! So we will also visit breweries, keller, gardens and sites outside of Bamberg!
The nature of this tour gives us a little more leeway in activities, time, shedule and free time for participants to explore a bit on their own!
We will spend about half the time in the city of Bamberg itself and half the time in the Upper Franconian countryside.

The dates for this tour are set from Wednesday to Sunday and at a time when a maximum amount of local beer kellers and gardens are open!
